Do you feel like no matter how hard you work at achieving your fat loss success, you reach a certain point and stall, self-sabotage and find yourself never really getting ahead? That might have something to do with the fact that you may not have your ‘success’ clearly defined. If you have not clearly outlined what your ultimate fat loos success looks like, you will not get there. Much like a destination in your GPS; if you don’t enter a destination, you will simply wonder around aimlessly. You will be able to get to places you know well without the GPS but the unknown areas will be a major struggle. Your fat loss goals are the same. You know what a certain fat loss success looks like because you have been there before. So you manage to get there with all the usual tactics. However, getting past that, is a whole new kettle of fish. You haven’t been there, you don’t know the way off by heart, so you rely on your internal (sub-conscious) GPS to get you there. But it won’t if you have not entered your destination.
So what do you do about it? Identify what your success looks like. You need to be as specific as possible. Remember your GPS will be specific, “at the round about take the 2nd exit…” so you need to get that specific too. Answer the following questions in as much detail as possible:
- What will your fat loss success look like?
- What size will you be?
- What weight will you be?
- How will you feel about yourself?
- What clothes will you wear?
- What activities will you engage in? Anything different to what you do now?
- How does your partner feel about your new look/feel? (if you have one). Are they supportive? How do you respond to the situation?
- How do your friends and loved ones respond to your new look? Are they supportive? Are they making smart alek comments (e.g. are you eating that again?) How do you respond to the situation?
- Does your working environment change at all?
- What is your daily routine like?
- What does your food look like?
- What does your training routine look like?
- What sort of mindset to you have?
When I was prepping for the World Championships in 2018, I knew exactly what I wanted my physique to present like on stage. I had a clear vision of the definition I wanted, the body fat percentage I wanted to be at, the muscle mass, and the weight. I knew what I wanted my costume to look like, what shoes I was wearing, my hair, make up, my posing routine, my pose down routine, everything. I knew every single little itty gritty detail. I had no doubt in my mind about the physique I was presenting; it was going to be the best I could present, no matter what. And it was.
I set out what the success would look like. I was then able to set the tasks I needed to complete (the route) in order for me to achieve it. I did not waiver one little bit, no matter how tempted I was, how tired I was, how busy I was; I got the job done. Because I knew where I was heading. If I had wondered around aimlessly, I would never have even made it to Queensland let along stand on stage, let along bring home 2 golds and a silver.
The reality is, if you do not have these vital questions clearly answered and defined for yourself, you will subconscious hold yourself back. Most people have a fear of the unknown. If fat loss success is an unknown territory for you, your subconscious will hold you back due to ‘fear of success’; you don’t know what it looks like so you avoid it. By creating an imagery of your success in your mind, you are manifesting the success by clearly identifying it as a safe place to go.
Get defining and you will get succeeding.
