Many of us have either a radical change in diet, to eating basic and cutting out process food. Particularly like those who have been on the Terrific Fitness (TF) Nutritional Bootcamp. They have noticed a sharp drop in weight on the scales of about 2 to 4kgs by the end of the 2 weeks. Then after 3 to 4 weeks it’s very slow. Why is this, what changes?
Our body retains water within it’s tissues for it’s own functions from chemical reactions, cushioning the joints, glucose stores in you muscles and muscle repair. You may find and feel after an intense workout you muscles feel swollen. It’s because extra water and blood has filled the muscles to aid the repair process. It reduces afterwards or by the end of the day.
Our current western diet has a lot of carbohydrates (sugars) and salt from the processed food many people eat. These two nutrient factors retain a lot of water in our bodies. There are extreme conditions which effect the lymphatic system and inflammation that causes even more water retention and cause swelling of our legs, in particular, and long term this can cause chronic problems.
When we radically change our diet, such as in the TF Nutritional Bootcamp, we purge all the processed food items, reduce sugar (processed carbohydrates) intake to nil, and fall back on basic animal products and vegetables to reset our body. This 2-week regime gradually reduces salt but also the amount of glucose (carbohydrate) stores in our muscles and body tissues.
For every molecule of glucose, it will carry with it 3 or 4 molecules of water with it to help its reactions with cells for energy conversion.
If you get rid of the glucose store out of your body, then you also get rid of the water stored with it. All of this represents a net reduction of weight in your body. But it will also come with side effects. Such as: tiredness, muscle weakness, headache, fogginess, lethargy, for a few days before your body adjusts and starts to balance your alternative energy stores and demands.
For most, it will take about 2 weeks for this adjustment to take place and the balance of water to adjust and hence you’ve lost weight before it slows down. Eventually with a reduction of carbohydrate (because you’re not eating processed sugars and grains anymore) your body adjusts to alternate sources and a proportion of energy will be drawn from fat storage and you’ll begin to lose weight at a slower rate 300-500gm a week approximately.
You’ve changed your eating habits for the better. You’ve begun to gear your body for healthier eating, living, and energy consumption without a buildup of water unnecessarily because of overloading of carbohydrate sugars and sodium in added salt.
This really does drive home the importance of cutting out processed foods. Not to mention the detriment that added preservatives and oxidative compounds have on the human body.
